There are technical workloads for servers that are already taking advantage today of GPGPU technology. The question is how far does the integration need to go? Do you put it all the way down into a single package (APU) or do you remain right outside the package with a direct link? On the client side it's an easy equation because 1 system = 1 CPU + 1 GPU. On the server side it is less clear. Most customers claim ~2:1 GPU to CPU ratio is probably right, but I have a customer that wants much higher densities.

The software developments over the next few years will help us determine what the optimal mix is.

And also keep in mind that not all workloads benefit from GPU technology, so it is not a slam dunk that every CPU needs to be an APU.

Dual core, fits in Brazos platform...entry level of market, and such a GPU has a big chance to end up in notebooks.
We can tell you that this dual-core has a DirectX 11 GPU, it comes in BGA packaging and it works with a quite acceptable 25W TDP.
The planned launch date is the latter part of Q4 2010 and this is of course if all goes well.
You can bet that after CES 2011, many vendors might have this CPU in their desktop and notebooks systems.
We can also add that this is a 32nm CPU/GPU or APU (Application Processing Unit) how AMD likes to call it and even this version of Fusion can support up to 4 cores, but it's different from Llano APU that goes in Lynx platform.

Výsledek hospodaření společnosti AMD za poslední 2Q tohoto roku:

tapes out its Bulldozer CPU architecture, mass production to begin in 1H 2011

*The company's new high-end architecture will be fabricated on the 32nm process at Globalfoundries
and is set to sample throughout the second half of 2010. (4 - 8 core CPU Zambezi)
*The first to release in the Bulldozer lineup, will use a modified AM3 r2 socket and should feature 8MB of L3 cache,
should support DDR3 1866MHz speeds, and should be paired with the Scorpio platform.
*The company has also stated that Interlagos is the server codename for its 32nm,
sixteen-core Opteron 6000 series processors based on socket G34 which will be paired with the Maranello platform.
*In the silicon manufacturing industry, the average time from tape out to general release for CPUs is about 9 to 12 months,
and with a tape out in mid-July 2010, Bulldozer is well on its way to a Q2 or Q3 release in 2011.
*Meanwhile, the company has also announced that it will dramatically switch the timing of its dual-core 40nm Ontario and 32nm Llano Fusion production ramps due to slower than anticipated progress of its 32nm yield curve.
"Llano production shipments are still expected to occur in the first half of next year," said Dirk Meyer.

Novinková a dobrá zpráva pochází z posledního podílu grafik AMD na trhu!
Aktuálně za 2Q 2010 51% pro ATI a trochu pod 49% Nvidia !
According to Mercury Research beancounters, ATI has managed to overtake Nvidia in discrete graphics sales.

Nvidia was traditionally the stronger player in the market and a year ago it had a 59 percent market share, while ATI was short of 41 percent. In Q2 ATI managed to grab 51 percent of the market, while Nvidia slipped down to just under 49 percent. As they say, what a difference a year makes.

Nvidia still has a decent chance to get back in the game with several upcoming GF10x products and the GF104. However, it is clear that ATI’s DirectX 11 lead has had a major impact on Nvidia’s business.

If we look at overall graphics sales, including IGPs and CPU-integrated graphics, Intel still reigns supreme with a 54.3 percent share. ATI is also going strong with 24.5 percent and Nvidia has to make the best out of 19.8 percent. Last year Nvidia’s overall share was 29.6 percent. Obviously, AMD and Intel will continue to dominate the IGP market.

Things are not looking up for Nvidia lately and the company has already announced that its revenue would not meet earlier projections.

28nm Graphics Chips from ATi Can Emerge Early Next Year
"For the 28nm process - aimed at both high performance and lower power devices - we will tape out products by the end of the year and start production in early 2011. The timing of when you will see products is customer-dependent but it is possible you could see them in [the first half of 2011]"

Globalfoundries’ 28nm fabrication process will be available in two variants:
* The 28nm-HP (High Performance) variant will be optimized for leading-edge applications in such areas as graphics, game consoles, storage, networking and media encoding.
* The 28nm-SLP (Super Low Power) variant is optimized for wireless mobile applications such as baseband, application processors, and other handheld functions that require long battery lifetime.

- novinka pojednává právě o čipu Llano, GPU jednotka by údajně měla mít slušných 480 stream jednotek, údajně teoreticky by mohla ohrozit i nějaké slabší desktopové grafiky. Osobně se domnívám, že Llano je takový "testovací kousek", jak se vše uchytí a bude spolu fungovat včetně podpory softwaru. Odhadl bych, že možná v roce 2012-2013 bude APU i v podobě architektury Bulldozer.

K Bulldozeru mám však také svou teorii, domnívám se, že tato první generace je jen takovým přechodovým mezníkem, protože např do desktopu a AM3+/AM3 pouzdra nebude možné zahrnout některé funkce a více jader než právě 8 (možná snad ještě 10 ?). A tedy další generace již bude větší patice s vícejádry a implementací něčeho dalšího (planou drby, že něčeho jako je HTT)
