AMD’s team in Austin managed to use two R700 dual-GPU graphic cards (four RV770 chips) to get a score of X12515. This was done with four GPUs, while Nvidia uses three GTX280 boards to achieve a similar score. The R700 boards were clocked at 778 MHz, while the GDDR5 memory was clocked at 980 MHz QDR (that's 3920 "MHz", or just 3.92 GigaTransfers/sec), we were told. This brought the total on-board video bandwidth to an impressive 250.8 GB/s.

AMD-ATI's upcoming R700 (rumored to be called the 4870 X2) two-chip graphics board will be the ultimate test of this strategy.

"It's a new proprietary inter-processor communication technology. If they put these two chips on one board and it does scale properly, then they have pulled off a coup," he said.

"When you gang up graphics chips (using the traditional Scalable Link Interface or CrossFire technologies) they roll off pretty fast. ("Roll off" implies that performance doesn't scale up well.) "So when you put two boards in, you don't get twice the performance but you (only) get one and a half. You put four boards in and you (only) get about 1.7, 1.8. What ATI is saying is that with two chips using (their) proprietary inter-bus, they will get 1.8 (the performance) with two chips. If that's true, you can expect to see four of them giving you something around 2.5."

The previous ATI dual-chip solution was very different, Peddie said. "The HD 3870 X2 was not a proprietary bus but a CrossFire connection. The CrossFire connection and the SLI connection are at the very, very end of the pipeline. Not the most efficient place to do an inter-processor communication. That's one of the reasons ATI has abandoned it."

Podstatne je ze po vydani X2 , sa uz nejako neoplati nic od nV kupovat

No snad 9800GTX, ale znizenie cien je zatim v nedohladne

//btw. HD2900XT bola vydana pred rokom a dnes ma hodnotu z povodnych 12000Sk len 2500Sk, kedze HD3870 idu v bazaroch po 3000 , akurat ju manik predava na Bazose, si musi hlavu trieskat o stenu

ja momentálne vôbec nevidím dôvod kupovať novú grafickú kartu - hovorím z pozície dočasného testera 9800 GTX(+) a iných kariet ...

btw: stále má RV770 rovnako kvalitný anizotropný filter ako R600, RV670 - teda, tu sa (žiaľ) žiadna zmena neuskutočnila, napriek 40 TMUs

Inak máš recht, trocha ma "vyklepalo" z výkonu RV770, ale potom prišlo ochladenie, že nie je vlastne čo hrať ... Takže kúpu odkladám na dobu neurčitú (wait for HD5000)

No ved to. Ze kupit by si mal aj co, lenze pri com to vyuzijes? Asi len pri Crysise, ktory dnes uz hra velmi malo ludi. A na ostatne somarinky ti staci aj HD3870/8800GT napriklad.

We have seen how the 4850 can take on the 9800GTX, 4870 taking on the 260GTX. According to news we received, the Radeon HD 4870 X2 which integrates two RV770XT GPUs (R700) model 4870X2 ATi made cards will go on sale by end of July.

The ref model PCB is named Spartan, model B509. Clk speeds are uncertain at press time. It will come with 16X32M x32 GDDR5 memory, 512 bits wide, 2GB(256Bit、1GBx2) and will sell for 499 USD.
